It is amazing to watch your child become a reader and writer. Though I spent years teaching school and helping children learn to read it is amazing to see the whole process:
learn the ABC's, then the letter sounds, then writing words only using the first letter for each word, then recognizing some words in the environment, then realizing there are more letters in a word than the first letter, then reading and writing on his own. When Cade was 18 months we were in Japan, we had letter magnets on the refrigerator. One day Corey said, "Cade, bring me the 'r'." Cade ran over to the refrigerator and grabbed the 'r'. We knew it must have been luck. So Corey called out another letter and Cade ran and got the correct one. Well, it ended up that he knew 18 out of the 26 and we didn't even realize it. We sure hadn't taught him, it was the Leap Frog magnets that sings each letter and sound. Cade has been able to read for a few weeks now. But, all he wants to do these days is draw pictures and write. If only I had a penny for everytime I have heard, "What does ___ start with?" over the past few months. Now, it is "Mama, how do you spell______?". Cade is a passionate child and whatever he is into he is absolutely, 100%, whole-heartedly into it. Almost obsessed with whatever his current interest might be. Right now it is writing, and skunks (
I know???). I don't worry about Cade one bit. He should do very well in school. Truth is, I admire his passion. I hope he never loses it!
